When it comes to lawn striping, whether it’s a DIY striping kit or a pre-made lawn striping kit, having a striping kit is going to give you greater results. But if you are a DIYer you’ll probably scoff at buying a kit – you can make your own! And it’s actually really easy.

But first – if you are going to spend time and money building a striping kit, is a DIY one going to perform as well as a purchased kit? Actually yes. In the video below you can see first hand. A good striping kit is actually about weight. So if you’re able to make your kit weigh more it will make better stripes.

DIY Lawn Striper vs Toro Lawn Striper vs Checkmate Striping Kit:

Here is the original striping kit. Just note the lawn in the background has stripes of dead grass because I was testing spray patterns with glyphosate

Now the great part about doing it yourself, you can always improve on it. You aren’t stuck with the diy striping kit how it is, and if it breaks it’s out of materials you can fix – not special plastic molding. Here I’m beefing the striping kit up:

Now it’s your turn to make your striping kit. What I find the most fun about a diy striping kit over a purchased one, you can play with different materials. The biggest difference will be what you fill the roller with. I used sand, but if you can find a material (lead weights) it could make even better stripes. But you don’t have to go all in right away, if you are on a budget make a basic version and then next year upgrade the filler.
